On the Straits Times today (2 July 2018), there was a forum letter in response to a request of having a 24/7 library. The Assistant Chief Executive of the National Library Board mentioned that the National Library Board (NLB) has a digital library which offers more than 450,000 e-book titles, 7,000 e-newspapers and e-magazines as well as 5,000 online courses.
Below is the main forum letter.
The Digital Library can be accessed via the NLB Mobile app. If you would like to download the books, you will be directed to install the Overdrive app.
I have been promoting the use of the Overdrive app as part of the Lifelong Learning segment in my Industry 4.0 In Action workshop. Reading is a key component in Lifelong Learning.
For people who read books often. They will understand that reading from books is different from reading on smart phones and tablets. I borrowed some books in Overdrive 2 weeks back. After reading 30 mins on my 5.5″ phone, my eyes felt very tired. This is expected as our eyes are not conditioned to stare at light emitting electronic devices such as LCD or LED panels for long duration. That explains why the adoption rate of Digital Library in Singapore is still quite low.
If only we can read library books on the Kindle. But Kindle do not allow additional apps to be installed and buying e-books from Amazon Store in Singapore is still not possible.
After doing some research on a solution, I came upon this newly released device – Onyx Boox Note 10.3″. This device was released in early-2018. I saw several online videos on YouTube that the larger e-ink screen size is very attractive. You no longer have to look at the typical 6″ smaller size e-ink reader. And reading PDF books is also easier with the crop function and large screen size. Importantly, you will be able to install the Overdrive app on the Onyx Boox Note 10.3″ and thereafter borrow books from there immediately.
I have recorded a video on how you can go about borrow books from Singapore National Library using the Overdrive app. Let’s take a look below.
I have been using this e-ink reader for 2 weeks now. And I am able to read library books before calling it a day. And my eyes definitely feel less tired compared to looking at my smart phone.
There are several benefits to using the Digital Library. Here are some below:
